Tasiilaq, formerly known as Ammassalik, is the largest settlement in East Greenland, accessible only by helicopter or boat and completely isolated from the rest of the island by the ice sheet. The town is surrounded by dramatic fjords cutting inland through some of Greenland's most rugged mountain terrain, and the region is a base for ski touring, ice climbing, and kayaking among icebergs. East Greenland's isolation means it retains a strongly traditional Inuit culture distinct from the more westernised west coast.
