Disko Island in western Greenland is a large, mountainous island rising to over 1,900 metres and covered by a small ice cap. The island is geologically distinct from the Greenland mainland, containing volcanic basalt formations and coal seams exposed in coastal cliffs. The main settlement of Qeqertarsuaq provides a base for hiking into the interior, and the surrounding sea is rich in whales, walrus, and seabirds.
