Draped along the mountains south of the Caspian Sea, the Hyrcanian Forests are living survivors of the woodlands that cloaked much of the northern temperate world 25 to 50 million years ago. More than 3,200 vascular plant species grow here, and leopards, wolves and brown bears still move beneath trees three to four centuries old. First inscribed for Iran in 2019, the UNESCO World Heritage listing was later extended to Azerbaijan's share of these ancient broad-leaved forests.
