Skaftafell is an area within Vatnajökull National Park in southeast Iceland, encompassing a forested oasis of birch and willow sheltered between glacier tongues. The popular Svartifoss waterfall here drops over columns of dark basalt that inspired the design of Reykjavik's Hallgrímskirkja. Trails lead from the visitor centre to Svartifoss, glacier viewpoints, and the summit of Kristínartindar at 1,126 metres.
