Krafla is an active volcanic caldera near Lake Mývatn, encompassing the Víti explosion crater — filled with a vivid aquamarine lake — and the Leirhnjúkur lava field, still warm and steaming from the eruption series of 1975–1984. A circular walking trail crosses fresh lava flows and passes clusters of fumaroles, providing a direct encounter with Iceland's ongoing volcanism. The caldera is visible evidence of the North Atlantic rift zone at the surface.
