Kerlingarfjöll is a rhyolite mountain range in the interior highlands, featuring vivid orange, red, and yellow hillsides produced by hydrothermal alteration. Geothermal activity is evident in steaming vents and hot springs throughout the valleys, and a small mountain hut resort provides basic accommodation for hikers. The area is accessible via the Kjölur mountain road and is best explored on foot via an expanding trail network.
