Ísafjörður is the largest town in the Westfjords, tucked onto a narrow spit of land extending into a deep fjord and ringed by steep mountains that hold snow well into summer. Its well-preserved 18th-century wooden warehouse district, the Eyri historic buildings, is among the oldest surviving townscapes in Iceland. The surrounding fjords are a base for hiking, sea kayaking, and boat access to Hornstrandir reserve.
