One of Iceland's largest waterfalls, Skógafoss plunges 60 metres across a width of 25 metres, generating a permanent mist cloud that produces rainbows on sunny days. A staircase of nearly 500 steps climbs the eastern cliff to a viewpoint overlooking the falls and the coastal plain below. The Skógá River continues from here into the Fimmvörðuháls and Laugavegur hiking corridors.
