Khami Ruins National Monument

West of Bulawayo, terraced granite platforms edged with decorated dry-stone walling mark the capital that rose after Great Zimbabwe was abandoned around the mid-16th century. Khami became the seat of the Torwa state, and excavations here have turned up objects carried from Europe and China — proof that its rulers traded across oceans for generations. Far quieter than its famous predecessor, the site pairs unhurried ruins with rich archaeology, and it was recognised on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1986.
