Trade made medieval Brugge one of Europe's commercial capitals, and the later silting of its sea channel froze the city in time, leaving canals, brick Gothic churches and step-gabled houses remarkably intact. The city nurtured the Flemish Primitive painters, Jan van Eyck among them, whose art carried its fame across the continent. UNESCO inscribed the historic centre of Brugge on the World Heritage List in 2000.
