Balancing granite boulders and whaleback domes give the Matobo Hills their otherworldly look, rising from the shield that underlies much of Zimbabwe. People have sheltered among these rocks since the early Stone Age, leaving one of the finest concentrations of rock paintings anywhere, and the hills remain alive with meaning — local communities still consult shrines and sacred places among the stones. UNESCO inscribed Matobo in 2003.
