Frankincense built Saba. From the 1st millennium BCE until Islam's arrival around 630 CE, the kingdom taxed and guided the incense caravans of Arabia, and its capital region at Marib grew monumental temples, ramparts and urban settlements at the desert's edge. Above all came water engineering: the great dam and irrigation works of Ma'rib created the largest man-made oasis of the ancient world. Seven sites of the Sabaean kingdom were inscribed by UNESCO in 2023.
