Dragon's blood trees hold their umbrella crowns over Socotra, the Indian Ocean archipelago so long isolated that evolution ran wild: 37% of its 825 plant species, 90% of its reptiles and 95% of its land snails exist nowhere else on Earth. Reefs with 253 coral species and waters rich in fish surround the four islands and two islets trailing off the Horn of Africa. UNESCO inscribed Socotra in 2008.
