Scholars once travelled from across the Muslim world to Zabid, whose Islamic university made this Tihama town famous far beyond Yemen — the country it served as capital during the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries. Its tight urban plan, courtyard houses and fortifications preserve the fabric of a medieval centre of learning. UNESCO inscribed the historic town in 1993.
