Skyscrapers of mud rise from the Wadi Hadhramaut: Shibam packed its 16th-century houses upward, tower upon tower inside a fortified wall, earning the nickname 'Manhattan of the desert'. Few places anywhere demonstrate so old and disciplined a commitment to vertical city-building. UNESCO inscribed the walled town in 1982.
