More than a thousand limestone islands — 1,133, by official count — stud the emerald waters of Ha Long Bay and the Cat Ba Archipelago in Vietnam's northeast. This is the world's most celebrated example of tower karst invaded by the sea, its drowned peaks forming both clustered cones and lone pillars across 65,650 hectares of seascape. First inscribed by UNESCO in 1994, the property now extends to Cat Ba's forested isles.
