Oral tradition and archaeology tell the same story in Chief Roi Mata's Domain: three places spread across Efate, Lelepa and Artok islands mark where Central Vanuatu's last paramount chief lived, died and was buried with many of his followers in the early 17th century. The peace-making reforms attributed to Roi Mata still carry moral weight in the region. In 2008 the domain became Vanuatu's first UNESCO World Heritage Site.
