Caravans rested at Khiva one last time before braving the desert road to Iran, sheltered within Itchan Kala's brick walls, which stand some ten metres high. The inner town keeps a rare coherence of Central Asian Islamic building: the columned Djuma Mosque, tiled madrasas and mausoleums, and two splendid palaces raised by Alla-Kulli-Khan in the early 19th century. Itchan Kala was inscribed by UNESCO in 1990, the first of Uzbekistan's World Heritage Sites.
