Portugal planted Colonia del Sacramento on the Río de la Plata in 1680 to needle Spanish power, and the little town changed hands repeatedly through a century of dispute before slipping from its founders for good. That contested history shows in its streetscape, where Portuguese, Spanish and later republican building styles blend along cobbled lanes. UNESCO inscribed the historic quarter in 1995.
