Thomas Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence and served as third president, yet counted architecture among his proudest pursuits. At Monticello, the plantation home he shaped and reshaped from 1769 to 1809, and in the 'academical village' he designed for the University of Virginia between 1817 and 1826, he turned classical antiquity into a language for the young republic's ambitions. UNESCO inscribed both Charlottesville landmarks in 1987.
