In a remote New Mexico canyon between 850 and 1250, ancestral Pueblo builders raised great houses of shaped sandstone unlike anything constructed in the region before or after, making Chaco the ceremonial, trading and political heart of the Four Corners country. The World Heritage property, inscribed by UNESCO in 1987, extends beyond Chaco Canyon to Aztec Ruins and outlying sites of this singular culture.
