Tigers swim between islands in the Sundarbans, the immense mangrove forest laced across the delta where the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna reach the Bay of Bengal. Bangladesh's share — 140,000 hectares of tidal channels, mudflats and salt-tolerant forest — adjoins the Indian portion listed in 1987, sheltering Bengal tigers, estuarine crocodiles, Indian pythons and some 260 bird species. UNESCO inscribed the Bangladeshi Sundarbans in 1997.
