Equatorial glaciers still cling to the Rwenzori — the fabled 'Mountains of the Moon' — whose highest point, Margherita Peak at 5,109 metres, ranks third among Africa's summits. Waterfalls, tarns and strange botanical giants, including tree-sized heathers, fill this alpine wonderland of nearly 100,000 hectares in western Uganda. UNESCO inscribed the national park in 1994.
