Roughly half of all mountain gorillas alive today shelter in the tangled slopes of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, 32,000 hectares of ancient forest in south-western Uganda where lowland and montane vegetation intergrade. More than 160 tree and over 100 fern species crowd its steep valleys, together with an abundance of birds and butterflies found in few other places. UNESCO inscribed the park in 1994.
