Cultural Landscape of Khinalig People and “Köç Yolu” Transhumance Route

Twice a year the Khinalig people move their flocks along the Köç Yolu, a 200-kilometre migration route linking their stone village high in the Greater Caucasus — about 2,350 metres up — with winter pastures on Azerbaijan's central plains. The community speaks its own language and has practised long-distance vertical transhumance for centuries, stringing the route with camps, pastures, mosques and mausoleums. UNESCO inscribed this living cultural landscape in 2023.
