For four centuries after its founding around 1350, Ayutthaya reigned as the Siamese capital, successor to Sukhothai and one of Asia's great cosmopolitan cities — until Burmese armies razed it in the 18th century. What survives, tall prang reliquary towers and the shells of vast monasteries, still conveys the scale of its former splendour. UNESCO listed the historic city in 1991.
