Thai civilization found its first great expression at Sukhothai, capital of Siam's first kingdom during the 13th and 14th centuries. Among its temple ruins and serene Buddha figures, borrowed influences and older local traditions fused rapidly into the distinctive Sukhothai style that shaped Thai art and architecture ever after. With its associated historic towns, the site was inscribed by UNESCO in 1991.
