Silk built Sheki. Profits from cocoon trading raised the high-gabled houses of this town at the foot of the Greater Caucasus, rebuilt in the 18th century after mudflows destroyed an earlier settlement. Its showpiece is the Khan's Palace, ablaze with painted interiors and shebeke windows — stained glass set into wooden lattice without a single nail — while the trading streets blend Safavid, Qajar and Russian building manners. UNESCO inscribed Sheki's historic centre in 2019.
