Black basalt gives Bosra its distinctive gravity — the southern Syrian city that once served as capital of Rome's province of Arabia and later welcomed caravans bound for Mecca. Within the old walls, a superbly preserved Roman theatre from the 2nd century seats thousands, surrounded by early Christian remains and historic mosques. UNESCO placed the ancient city on the World Heritage List in 1980.
