Boulder-strewn hills rising from Azerbaijan's semi-desert hold an immense outdoor archive: more than 6,000 rock engravings spanning some 40,000 years, from the Upper Paleolithic era down to medieval times. Dancing figures, reed boats, oxen and hunters record the generations who lived here in caves and camps when the climate after the last Ice Age was kinder. Gobustan's 537-hectare cultural landscape entered the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2007.
