The Lanes are a warren of narrow twisting alleys in the heart of Brighton, following the street pattern of the original fishing settlement of Brighthelmstone. Once home to fishermen and their cottages, the tightly packed lanes are now filled with jewellers, antique dealers, boutiques and cafes squeezed into tiny frontages. The passages open unexpectedly onto small courtyards and squares, and the historic character survives despite the surrounding modern seaside city. Visitors wander the maze browsing independent shops near the seafront.
