Vieux Tours is the medieval heart of the Loire Valley city, centred on the picturesque Place Plumereau. Timber-framed houses with carved beams and jettied upper floors surround the square, which fills with cafe tables under the plane trees. The district grew around the tomb of Saint Martin and served pilgrims and merchants for centuries. Narrow streets radiate past Renaissance mansions and stone gateways, and the nearby cathedral adds Gothic grandeur. Visitors find one of the region's fullest concentrations of half-timbered architecture.
