Trieste's principal opera house, opened in 1801, stands near the grand seafront square of the Adriatic port city. Its design drew on the leading theatre architects of the day, and it was later renamed after Giuseppe Verdi following the composer's death. The horseshoe auditorium hosts opera and an operetta festival that reflects the city's Central European crossroads. Positioned between the Habsburg-era waterfront buildings and the old town, it embodies Trieste's history as a meeting point of Italian, Slavic and Austrian influences.
