The oldest theatre on Mallorca, this house in central Palma dates in its present form from the mid-nineteenth century, rebuilt after earlier fires. It has long served as the island's chief venue for opera, concerts and drama and hosts an annual opera season. The tiered horseshoe auditorium and its restrained classical façade sit within the network of narrow streets near the cathedral. As the principal lyric stage of the Balearic Islands, it combines a long civic history with a continuing programme of music and theatre in the old town.
