Brescia's opera house grew from an eighteenth-century academy theatre and was progressively enlarged and lavishly decorated through the nineteenth century. Its foyer and auditorium are celebrated for elaborate frescoes, stucco and gilding that make it one of the most richly ornamented theatres in Lombardy. A national monument, it hosts opera, concerts and a longstanding piano festival. Set along the historic Corso Zanardelli, it forms part of the monumental heart of the city and offers guided visits highlighting its decorative interiors.
