The state opera of Lower Saxony performs in a classical building on the Opernplatz in central Hanover, completed in the mid-nineteenth century to designs by court architect Georg Ludwig Friedrich Laves. Its sandstone façade with a colonnaded loggia is a landmark of the city centre. Damaged in the war and later restored, the house presents opera and ballet across a full season. The surrounding square, lined with cafés, is one of Hanover's principal gathering places and among the finest examples of Laves's neoclassical work.
