The Wellington Monument stands on a ridge of the Blackdown Hills above the Somerset town of Wellington, from which the Duke of Wellington took his title. Begun in 1817 after his victory at Waterloo, the triangular stone obelisk suffered repeated funding troubles and was not finished for decades, eventually reaching about 53 metres. It is claimed to be the tallest three-sided obelisk in the world. Owned by the National Trust, it sits amid open grassland with sweeping views across the Vale of Taunton Deane.
