New Brighton Tower once stood on the Wirral shore across the Mersey from Liverpool, opened in 1900 and briefly the tallest structure in Britain at about 173 metres, surpassing Blackpool's. Built to draw day-trippers to the seaside resort, it fell into disrepair during the First World War when maintenance lapsed and was dismantled by 1921. Its surviving base building, which held a ballroom, hosted concerts for decades. The site is remembered as a lost Victorian landmark of the north-west coast.
