A vast limestone plain dominates southern Öland, where Baltic islanders have farmed for some five thousand years by adapting their lives to thin soils and relentless wind. Villages, field systems and open grazing lands preserve an unbroken record of settlement reaching from prehistory into the present day. This long negotiation between people and a demanding island landscape earned southern Öland UNESCO World Heritage listing in 2000.
