The Grugapark is a large botanical and leisure park in Essen, created for a horticultural exhibition in 1929 and expanded over later shows. It combines themed gardens, greenhouses, a small zoo and open lawns across a broad site in the western German city. Features include a dahlia garden, an alpine garden and a large aviary, linked by a miniature railway that circles the grounds. Sculpture, fountains and a music pavilion add to its role as a year-round recreation ground for the Ruhr region.
