The grand civic square of Belo Horizonte was designed as the administrative heart of the planned city at the end of the nineteenth century. A formal French-style garden with symmetrical palm-lined avenues leads to the former state government palace at its head. In recent years the surrounding buildings have been converted into a cultural circuit of museums and galleries, giving the square a second life. Illuminated fountains, mature trees and the elegant governmental architecture make it a favored place for evening walks and open-air events.
