A historic waterfront square in central Rio de Janeiro, this plaza takes its name from the date of the proclamation of the Brazilian republic in 1889. Facing Guanabara Bay, it is surrounded by colonial and imperial-era buildings, including the former royal palace where the Portuguese court once resided. An ornate nineteenth-century fountain and the arcaded Travessa do Comércio lie nearby. Ferries to Niterói depart from the adjacent terminal, and a weekend antiques market fills the plaza, blending maritime bustle with political history.
