Karlskrona was willed into being in the late 17th century as the principal base of the Swedish navy, and it remains Europe's clearest example of a planned naval town from that age. The original layout survives essentially intact, together with dockyards, fortifications and public buildings that carry the story of naval construction from the founding era into the present. UNESCO added the port to the World Heritage List in 1998.
