Stortorget is the grand central square of Malmö, laid out in the 16th century as one of the largest market squares in Scandinavia. The Renaissance town hall with its restored façade dominates one side, and an equestrian statue of King Charles X Gustav, who won the region for Sweden, rises at the centre. A vaulted historic cellar restaurant lies beneath one corner. Cafés and civic buildings surround the paving, and the smaller Lilla Torg with its half-timbered houses adjoins it just to the south.
