Piazza San Domenico is a quiet square in central Bologna dominated by the basilica that holds the tomb of Saint Dominic, founder of the Dominican order, whose marble ark was carved by leading Renaissance sculptors. Two curious raised tombs of medieval jurists stand on columns in the square, and a Marian column rises nearby. Porticoed buildings enclose the space, typical of the arcaded city. Away from the busiest tourist routes, the square offers a calm setting to admire the basilica's austere brick front.
