Place Bellecour is one of the largest open squares in Europe, a vast expanse of red gravel at the centre of Lyon between the Rhône and Saône rivers. A bronze equestrian statue of King Louis XIV dominates the middle, and a smaller statue honours the writer and aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, born in the city. Bordered by uniform 19th-century façades, the square offers a clear view up to the Fourvière basilica on its hill. It hosts a big wheel, festivals and markets, and marks the city's central reference point.
