Grey's Monument stands at the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne, a tall column raised in 1838 to honour Earl Grey and the Reform Act, and the space around it serves as the city's principal public square and meeting point. Grainger Street and the elegant curve of Grey Street radiate from its base, lined with Georgian classical façades that give the district its character. Street performers, market stalls and rallies gather here, and on clear days visitors climb the internal staircase to a viewing platform beneath the statue.
