Tay Phuong Pagoda occupies a low hill west of Hanoi and is renowned above all for its collection of eighteenth-century wooden statues, especially a set of expressive arhat figures counted among Vietnam's finest religious sculptures. Reached by a long flight of laterite steps, its three tiered halls have gracefully curved roofs decorated with dragon and phoenix motifs. Each carved arhat conveys a distinct posture and emotion, illustrating the skill of Vietnamese woodworkers.
