But Thap Temple, in Bac Ninh province near Hanoi, is one of the most important surviving temples of northern Vietnam, celebrated for seventeenth-century wood carving of exceptional quality. Its greatest treasure is a large gilded statue of the thousand-armed, thousand-eyed Guanyin, regarded as a masterpiece of Vietnamese sculpture. The compound stretches through a long sequence of halls linked by a covered stone bridge and topped by a distinctive brick tower.
