The Jameh Mosque of Tabriz is the historic congregational mosque of this major city in northwestern Iran, occupying a site used for worship since the early Islamic centuries. Rebuilt after earthquakes that repeatedly struck the region, it retains brick domed halls and a large prayer space adjoining the sprawling historic bazaar. For long periods it served as a centre of religious teaching in the Azerbaijan region of Iran. Its position at the heart of the covered market makes it a focus of the old city's life.
